BBQ, Beer & a Relaxing Float Down the Potomac

Buy Tickets $69 $107

Take a second and picture your perfect summer escape from the hustle and bustle of D.C. Now, we’re not mind readers, but it’s probably a fair guess that your summer fantasy included cold beer, barbecue and an afternoon of lazy shenanigans on a major body of water. And if that’s the case, you’re in luck — because that fantasy can become a reality on the River Tubing and Brewery Tour. On the day of the trip, your only responsibility is meeting the bus at one of the pickup locations — and after that, all you’ve got to do is take it easy. The bus will whisk you away to a three-hour river tubing experience where you — and your floating cooler, if you want to bring one — will drift down the beautiful Shenandoah and Potomac Rivers. Once you’ve had your fill, hop out of the river for a hearty BBQ lunch, followed by a quick drive over to the award winning Vanish Farmhouse Brewery.

Klytmnestra: Epic One-Woman Slam Poem

Buy Tickets $20 $40

A priestess enters a cemetery suffused with the shades and apparitions of black culture. Yet she conjures the spirits of a different sort — Orestes, Iphigenia and Klytmnestra. This dynamic one-woman slam poem, presented at D.C.’s Anacostia Playhouse, is a saga of strong women, the men who seek to destroy them, and the dangerous extremes this kind of society can reach if left unchecked. Fusing Kabuki, African dance and Greek myth, Klytmnestra: An Epic Slam Poem is a dynamic retelling of the classic tale written to vindicate a mother slain by her own son’s hand.

Shakespeare’s Gender-Bending Comedy

Buy Tickets $10 $20

Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night is a story of unrequited love — a tale both hilarious and heartbreaking. Shipwrecked and alone, Viola disguises herself as a boy and enters into Duke Orsino’s service. Lovesick Orsino sends her to court the Lady Olivia, but Olivia is much more interested in this cute young newcomer. When, unbeknownst to her, Viola’s identical twin Sebastian also washes ashore, a merry brand of chaos ensues. Is it possible for this all to end well? Well, it is a comedy. One of Shakespeare’s most delightful plays, Twelfth Night is a classic tale of reckless revenge, mistaken identity and mismatched lovers. Enjoy the National Players’ fresh take on this spirited story on the stage of the Olney Theatre Center.

One of the cleverest comedies by one of the greatest writers in the English language, The Importance of Being Earnest has delighted audiences since its premiere in 1885. Oscar Wilde’s scintillating, hilarious work introduces us to two charming bachelors who are each living a double life, aided by a fictional alter ego called “Ernest.” But the two fall truly in love with a pair of proper young women — both of whom are partial to men named Ernest. Wicked wit and dead-on social satire are wrapped in a confection of dual identities, matrimonial matters, and the provenance of a particular handbag.

See how public parks are attracting residents and visitors to the communities along the Anacostia River on a walking tour featuring a trek across the 11th Street Bridge. Start in the recently developed Capitol Riverfront, site of The Yards Park and its fountains, water wall, elevated overlook, and grassy areas. The neighborhood was once home to D.C. attractions of a different sort, iconic gay night clubs like Tracks (remember the volley ball court?) and Cinema Follies. Now, new landmarks like Nationals Park and the U.S. Department of Transportation headquarters buildings dominate the landscape, yet they stand in the shadow of one of D.C.’s oldest institutions: the Washington Navy Yard, established in 1799. Nearby is the entrance to the 11th Street Bridge, where breathtaking vistas of the Anacostia River can be enjoyed from its pedestrian walkway. This walkway is poised to be transformed into the 11th Street Bridge Park by the firm OMA+OLIN and nonprofit Building Bridges Across the River. Built on the original pillars of the old road bridge, the new park will be roughly the size of three football fields placed end to end!

How to Get Away With Murder’s Jack Falahee stars in this new Kennedy Center production of playwright Evan Linder’s uncompromising exploration of race, family and betrayal in the American South, which won Chicago’s prestigious Jefferson Award in 2016 for Best New Work. Jim and Laurel Parker are about to become new parents. They’re broke. They’re loud. They’re proud Southerners. When Laurel gives birth to their long overdue child, she and Jim are faced with the biggest challenge of their lives. Byhalia, Mississippi explores a couple in the midst of turmoil — and a town with a racially charged past that finds its way into the present. Find out for yourself why the Chicago Tribune says “we need this story of interracial friendship even more now.” This incredible production is directed by Kimberly Senior, director of the Pulitzer Prize-winning Disgraced on Broadway.

A brisk, biting comedy about a cynic who thinks insincerity is a sin. But the joke’s on him when he falls for an ingenue who’s more than his match. Matt Minnicino’s A Misanthrope distills Molière’s best-known farce into quippy rhyming couplets. And it pokes social flattery with a hot take on the absurdity of modern hot airs. Hypocrisy has never been more hilarious. If we got snarky tweets from 17th-century France, they would sound something like this.

In addition to the centuries of slavery forced upon African-Americans, one of the greatest horrors in American history is the more than 4,000 lynchings of African-Americans that have taken place at the hands of white lynch mobs. “And They Lynched Him on a Tree,” William Grant Still’s rarely performed 1940 choral ballad will be the centerpiece of Congressional Chorus’ season finale concert, Let Justice Roll, which focuses on the struggle to bring justice, freedom and hope to everyone who calls this country their home. The work is a groundbreaking composition that shines a stark spotlight on a very dark chapter in American history.

Woodley Park, situated on a peak of land rising from the valley of Rock Creek, originally attracted Washingtonians seeking relief from the heat and bustle of the city. By 1918, both visitors and locals could book a room at the elegant Wardman Park Hotel, which quickly attracted a well-heeled and well-connected clientele. Now known as the Wardman Tower, the building contains some of the most expensive luxury condominiums in D.C. A stroll along the neighborhood’s winding streets reveals city living on a smaller scale, with English Village-inspired houses built around the eponymous estate of Woodley, the current campus of the Maret School and once home to attorney Philip Barton Key and President Grover Cleveland. Architectural gems such as the Art Deco Kennedy-Warren apartments and the ultra-Modern Swiss chancery contrast with the “lions and tigers and bears” (pandas, that is) at the Smithsonian National Zoo, who roar their approval of this emerald locale!

In 1920, Russian Jewish writer Isaac Babel starts a diary while wandering the countryside with the Red Cavalry. In 2010, after the crash of an aircraft carrying the Polish president, his diary is discovered among the wreckage. What did Babel write, and why does it matter so much to one ruthless KGB agent destined to become one of the most powerful figures in the world? Describe the Night uncovers the mystery by tracing the stories of seven lost souls connected across decades by history, fiction, lies and blood. Pulitzer Prize-finalist Rajiv Joseph returns to Woolly after hit productions of Guards at the Taj and Gruesome Playground Injuries. This new piece has been described as a “work of major ambition” (The New York Times) that will feel both timeless and tuned in to the age of #FakeNews.

This riveting, inspiring hip-hop tinged play is a 90-minute roller coaster down memory lane and an astute testimony to the role of women in rap. The genre, personified as a woman known as H.E.R. (taken from Common’s 1994 hit “I Used to Love H.E.R.”), is rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries and on her deathbed. The world seems to care little about the threat of losing her until five women of unlikely, diverse, and often opposing views show up unexpectedly at the hospital. Each with her own agenda, the women represent all elements and eras of hip hop, both the good and traumatic. Don’t miss this unique exploration of hip hop from the female perspective at The Kennedy Center’s Family Theater in Washington, D.C.

And the fitting finale features Dvořák’s Ninth Symphony, which has been wildly popular ever since its premiere in 1893 — in fact, Neil Armstrong famously took a recording of it with him to the moon. Subtitled From the New World, this masterpiece of the classical canon fuses folk tunes, eastern Europe rhythms and sounds from Dvorák’s native Bohemia.

Round House Theatre’s A Doll’s House, Part 2: Ibsen’s Heroine Returns in New Sequel

Buy Tickets $45.90 - $60.30 $51 - $67

Well ahead of its time for its depiction of Nora, a wife and mother whose search for self-worth leads her to leave her unhappy marriage, Henrik Ibsen’s A Doll’s House signaled a move toward realism and feminism in theater. Now in Part 2, we’ll witness what happens 15 years later when Nora shows up on that same doorstep, courtesy of up-and-coming playwright Lucas Hnath (Obie-winning The Christians, Red Speedo). Called “explosively funny” by the Hollywood Reporter, the play earned eight 2017 Tony nominations, along with raves from The New York Times as “the best play of the year.” See the hit Broadway sequel to Ibsen’s groundbreaking 19th-century drama, presented by Round House Theatre, directed by Nicole A. Watson, when it comes to the Lansburgh Theatre in Washington, D.C.

In 1996, arena rock superstars Journey put the band back together to record their tenth studio album, Trial by Fire. Shortly after the release of this reunion album lead singer and signature voice, Steve Perry injured himself while training for what was to be a high energy road show. With Steve Perry unable to perform, the Trial by Fire tour became “the tour that never happened.” Imagine if Steve Perry had never injured himself on that fateful day. What would the Trial by Fire tour look like? Flash forward to the present. Trial by Fire is born out of the hearts of five seasoned North Carolina-based musicians who have decided to answer that question. It is their vision to bring that 1996 tour to Journey fans across the country; to embrace the sound and visuals of the Steve Perry era of Journey. Prepare to let Trial by Fire take you back to an earlier day when lighters were held high, and you couldn’t help but sing along to such powerful choruses as “Don’t Stop Believin’," “Wheel in the Sky," “Lights," “Separate Ways” and “Faithfully.”

The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui

Buy Tickets $7.50 - $25 $15 - $50

Arturo Ui is a tale of the meteoric rise of a small-time Brooklyn hoodlum who takes over the cauliflower racket in 1930s Chicago. Ui ruthlessly disposes of his competitors to enrich himself and gain power. Both entertaining and provocative, this play is a powerful parable to Adolf Hitler’s rise to power in Germany. It also elicits comparisons to members of our government who aim to seize more power and control over us. Don’t miss this spellbinding play, which depicts evil fascism on the march while portraying the dark sides of human nature. This story reminds us how those who lust for power and expand the grips of government often lead us to tyranny. Arturo Ui at D.C.’s Atlas Performing Arts Center is fourth play by Bertolt Brecht that Scena Theatre has produced in its 32-year history. It contains some scenes depicting violence. It’s suitable for patrons ages 14 and older and parental discretion is advised.

In an old abandoned theater with a checkered past, an eccentric mystic gathers three actors to stage a performance of Hamlet. To make matters even stranger, the mystic informs the cast that the part of Hamlet will be played by an actor who died over a century ago. A comedy about belief: in what and whom do we believe — or not believe — and why? Plenty of free street parking is available on Harewood Road. Beethoven’s monumental “Choral” Symphony No. 9 is arguably the greatest symphony in the history of Western music. While Leonard Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms teems with the freshness and vigor of youth, Symphony No. 9 probes the depths of the human soul, culminating with the most famous ode to joy in all music. In one of the decisive moments of the 20th century, Bernstein conducted Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 on Christmas Day 1989 in the Ode to Freedom concert celebrating the fall of the Berlin Wall and making a universal declaration of faith in the power of freedom to unite humankind. On that special occasion, the chorus replaced the word “joy” with “freedom.” In the same spirit, the Chichester Psalms represents “a visionary plea for reconciliation and unity throughout the world.”

Mortality may be the thing that binds us all together, but why be morbid when we can have a party instead? In this regional premiere, celebrated playwright Young Jean Lee’s look at living life with death on the horizon comes to the stage. Young Jean Lee has a fantastic production history here in the DC area, and Flying V is happy to be producing her work for the first time. The show is directed by Josh Sobel, the former Artistic Director of Haven Theatre making not only his DC area debut, but also his first show after stepping down as AD to pursue a full time freelance career. Josh previously directed a production of We’re Gonna Die in Chicago which drew widespread critical acclaim and was picked up to run at Steppenwolf. Flying V Company member and fan favorite Farrell Parker fronts a live band in this mash-up performance that combines elements of a storytelling session, existential stand up routine, and rock concert to explore real-life experiences of facing down our inevitable demise. There’ll also be a different opening act each week to set the table — from musicians to magicians, stand-up comics to storytellers. The result is a life-affirming show that explores the ways we’re in this together even in our most isolating moments, and the one thing we all have in common: We’re Gonna Die.

Now, Mosaic Theater Company’s production of Twisted Melodies offers a fictionalized journey through that tortured and brilliant mind, giving you a glimpse into the life of a man lost in space and time as he battles a truly insidious mental illness. The Oresteia: Epic Greek Trilogy of Tragedies

Buy Tickets $35.50 - $54 $71 - $108

Called the father of tragedy, Greek playwright Aeschylus wrote more than 70 plays in his lifetime. Of those, only seven have survived. Lucky for us, among those seven lies his greatest work, The Oresteia, a trilogy of Greek tragedies that brilliantly explores themes of vengeance, justice and the influence of the gods. Through 10 years of war, grief and rage, Queen Clytemnestra lies in wait for her husband Agamemnon’s return, determined to avenge one child, only to doom the others. The Oresteia chronicles a violence that can only be stopped when society peers into its own soul and sees the depths of its complicity. Playwright Ellen McLaughlin, whom Tony Kushner has called “a dramatist of courage, intelligence, wit and lyricism,” has written a new version of the classic, weaving together the works of Aeschylus with stunning poetry and emotional heft. Experience this timeless classic live at Sidney Harman Hall in D.C.

Fresh off its Tony-nominated Broadway revival, Falsettos arrives at the Kennedy Center in DC as “an exceptional production of a perfect musical” (The New York Times). At times both hilarious and achingly poignant, Falsettos shines an ahead-of-its-time spotlight on the infinite possibilities that make up a modern family … and a beautiful reminder that love can tell a million stories. A hit when it premiered on Broadway in 1992, this ever-relevant show won Tony Awards for its book by James Lapine and William Finn (The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee) and its score, also by Finn.
