Over the course of five days, three writers frantically craft (and act out all of the parts!) one of the most beloved screenplays of all times. French Impressionism: Small Group Art Tour

Buy Tickets $20 $79.99

If you thought that your local community art gallery was cutthroat, then you haven’t been introduced to the French Salon of the early 1860s. At a time when politics was as heavy as a layered chiffon skirt, and art was by the numbers, change was ripe to happen. Curiously, the art scene would be met by renegades whom dubbed themselves Impressionist. We will walk you through the rise and fall of this fabulous art scene by looking at several iconic examples created by the likes of Edouard Manet, Eugene Boudin, Mary Cassatt, Paul Cezanne, Vincent Van Gogh, Paul Gauguin, Camille Pissaro, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, and Claude Monet. Our small group will discover the close friendships, few power brokers, and technical advances that allowed this powder keg of innovation to explode. Our small group two-hour odyssey begins at the lower level Constitution Avenue entrance to the National Gallery of Art. We will begin the tour by taking a look at the iconic sculpture Little Dancer before moving into the National Gallery of Art Impressionism Exhibit Hall where we will find the answer — why was the French Salon ripe for disruption by a few artists.

The boisterous DJ Elephant Man (aka Energy God) was born O’Neil Bryan in 1974. Overly large ears as a child earned him the nickname “Dumbo Elephant” from his classmates in the Seaview Gardens area of Kingston, Jamaica. Shabba Ranks and Bounty Killer were Seaview residents at the time, and with King Jammy’s studio not so far away, Elephant Man had an early exposure to dancehall culture. While singing at the gates of Ranks and Jammy’s studios, Bounty Killer heard him and suggested forming a group with other Seaview teens. The group was originally called the Seaview Family, but after Bounty Killer had a massive hit with “Big Guns Scare Dem,” the name changed to Scare Dem Crew. Scare Dem Crew only released one album but played multiple festivals around Jamaica, giving Elephant Man a chance to refine his on-stage persona. Dancehall night at 1998’s Reggae Sumfest was a highlight, with Elephant Man climbing up a television camera crane and delivering his energetic rhymes high above the audience.

I have come to believe that our impulse to fold in when grieving is a way to keep the pieces of the heart together after it breaks. Yoga helps bring harmony between the mind and body. Yoga helps us loosen the emotional and physical tightness in our bodies caused by grief. Join me for the series at Mind Your Body Oasis Yoga Studio in Arlington.

Love Songs is a composition by Candian/Serbian composer Ana Sokolovic. In its original form, it breaks the bonds of narrative to be an hour-long free-form exploration of the various natures of human love. Written for one unaccompanied soprano, the songs set various poems about love in all its forms — maternal, platonic, amorous, erotic — to music. At times silly, sad, sexy, strange, these songs are broken up by movements Sokolovic calls DOVES, in which the words “I Love You” are spoken and sung in hundred of languages. This work is also intended to be free to the performer’s interpretation, and for this late night cabaret experience, Maribeth Diggle (from IN Series’ 2019 production of Butterfly) returns from Belgium to create a performance experience that blends Sokolovic’s composition with elements of free improvisation, collaboration with Baltimore vocal-percussion and beat-box artist Shodekeh, movement and play, and audience live participation in creating the work.

Here Be Sirens, by American Kate Soper, explores with wit, humor, and pathos, the experience of Homer’s Odyssean three singers. Here Be Sirens is a remarkable work by a remarkable composer. At once whimsical, witty, wondrous, and weird, this opera portrays the three mythical sirens pondering the meaning of their own beings, the tension of their history and their future, between brief pauses when they woo, wound, and consume the poor sailors passing by. Performed by three sopranos and a piano they themselves manipulate, the work combines singing, speaking, extended vocal techniques, and a wry approach to lyrical anthropology which conjures laughter and contemplation. Kate Soper is without doubt one the most exciting composers in America today, with a truly original voice as both composer and a soprano. Here Be Sirens is just one of her many surprising and powerful compositions for female voices, which use clarity and intelligence to shatter preconceived notions of form and balance.

Ally Theatre Company’s take on the incendiary play by Joel Drake Johnson takes another look at the ever-topical questions about the prevalence of ingrained racism in America. This tense workplace thriller examines the realities of a so-called “post-racial” workplace where two co-workers — one black, the other white — are driven apart by the machinations of their boss. A chilling power struggle ensues that spins wildly out of control. This incisive and shocking dark comedy will keep you in its claustrophobic grip until the final moment. Ally Founding and Producing Artistic Director, Ty Hallmark, returns to direct her first Ally show since our premiere production, The Most Spectacularly Lamentable Trial of Miz Martha Washington. It is only now, at the age of 98, that French-Jewish Marthe Cohn can talk freely about her experience as a spy during the war. Known at the time as Chichinette, she was recruited as a young woman by the French army and sent to gather intelligence from inside Germany. At all of four and a half feet tall, Cohn – then as today – may not look like much of a threat, but her incredible bravery and resourcefulness contributed to the Nazis’ eventual defeat. The Accidental Spy is as dynamic as the woman whose extraordinary story it tells. Her harrowing journey is told with reverence, while her joie de vivre shines through, filling the film with hope for the future.

Back by popular demand! An audience favorite at JxJ 2019. When Yakov Cohen’s (Shuli Rand, Ushpizin) daughter is expelled from school for “ethnic reasons,” he decides to fight back. It’s 1983, and Cohen is a regular Jerusalemite with no money, connections or political experience. What he has in spades, however, is the passionate will to take action on behalf of Sephardic Jews who’ve too long been treated as second class citizens. The Unorthodox brings to life the stunning rise of Israel’s Shas political party, through the story of Cohen’s improbable campaign — one full of love for his fellow man and equally animated by a great sense of humor and a whole lot of rage. This runaway hit was the Opening Night film at the Jerusalem International Film Festival, the Miami Jewish Film Festival and the Seattle Jewish Film Festival.

Silver Spring Stage transports audiences back to 1950’s Washington, D.C., for Topher Payne’s award-winning comedy/drama of two ideal “All-American” couples who are actually gay with a perfect arrangement of each other’s spouses. Inspired by the true story of the earliest stirrings of the American gay rights movement during the “Lavender Scare,” Bob and Norma work at the Department of State with the task of outing fellow employees which actually includes them. Madcap classic sitcom-style laughs give way to provocative drama as the two couples are forced to stare down the closet door.

In post-WWII Leningrad, two women, Iya and Masha (astonishing newcomers Viktoria Miroshnichenko and Vasilisa Perelygina), intensely bonded after fighting side by side as anti-aircraft gunners, attempt to readjust to a haunted world. As the film begins, Iya, long and slender and towering over everyone — hence the film’s title — works as a nurse in a shell-shocked hospital, presiding over traumatized soldiers. A shocking accident brings them closer and also seals their fates. The 28-year-old Russian director Kantemir Balagov won Un Certain Regard’s Best Director prize at this year’s Cannes Film Festival for this richly burnished, occasionally harrowing rendering of the persistent scars of war, which you can see at Cafritz Hall in Washington, D.C.

The nine planets (or nava graha in Sanskrit) are worshipped as deities in Vedic Astrology. In the body, they facilitate the working of individual karma, while in the world, the unraveling of collective karma. Based on the idea that each of us has traits of Navagraha within us, dancers will explore and use the nine energies to connect the Self with the Universe. These planets according to Hinduism are Surya (Sun), Chandra (Moon), Mangala (Mars), Budha (Mercury), Guru/Brihaspati (Jupiter), Shukra (Venus), Shani (Saturn), Rahu & Ketu (North & South Nodes). Jayamangala is a premier Indian arts institution that has served the DMV area for 25+ years through performances, classes, workshops, retreats, and conferences in music, dance, and theater. Jayamangala dancers and musicians have traveled and performed across the USA, Africa, Mexico, Asia, and Europe in a professional capacity to critical acclaim. DIRECT CURRENT presents a music and dance double-bill crowned by the East Coast premiere of 1 0 0 1, performed live by its creators: choreographer and Company Wayne McGregor member Fukiko Takase, “a diabolo of a dancer” (Evening Standard, UK) best-known for her viral video collaboration with Radiohead’s Thom Yorke, and composer Dustin O’Halloran, whose original scores for Marie Antoinette, Lion and Transparent have been recognized with Oscar® and Golden Globe nominations and an Emmy Award. Produced, as at its premiere in Minneapolis, by Kate Nordstrum, a “curatorial powerhouse with international pull” (Minnesota Public Radio), 1 0 0 1 explores ideas of technology, humanity and mind-body dualism in an existential, electronics-forward performance. As we approach the age of AI, the collaborators ask: how will a new form of consciousness manifest inside a body? What will happen to our soul? 1 0 0 1 shares the program with Variations, an in-depth look at the “theme and variations” structure by Dance Metro DC Award-winning choreographer Erica Rebollar, founder of the RebollarDance collective, to original music by Golden Reel Award-winner Charlie Campagna.

Written by Harrison David Rivers. Directed by Otis Ramsey-Zöe, Jesse (Helen Hayes Award Winner Justin Weaks), an introspective black playwright, finds his lack of activism questioned by his white boyfriend, Neil (Noaf Schaefer), an impassioned member of the Black Lives Matter Movement. Tensions between them continue to grow with each headline announcing another extrajudicial killing. But the human heart can hold complex and often contradictory things, and the two men find themselves at a crossroads. This Bitter Earth explores the quiet revolutions of normalcy, reminding us of the intractable bind between the personal and political and the strength of love in today’s turbulent world.

Artistic Director Simon Godwin makes his directorial debut at the Shakespeare Theatre Company with a re-staging of his recent, acclaimed production of Timon of Athens, featuring Olivier Award-winner Kathryn Hunter in an “astonishing performance” (The Guardian). Timon lives in a golden world of opulence and generosity, throwing wild parties attended by politicians, artists, and the celebrities of Athens. When she loses her wealth and her friends abandon her, Timon takes to the forest, exchanging her luxurious gowns for sackcloth and plotting revenge against the city she loves. Godwin’s daring take on this rarely produced play yields “a parable for our times… and perhaps a nifty touchstone for spiritual renewal” (Daily Telegraph).

An elderly socialite mourns the death of her poet son, who died under mysterious circumstances. Eager to protect her son’s image, she hires a doctor to silence the only witness to the tragic event — but the shattering truth fights its way to the surface, as it always does in Williams’ world.

“We don’t publish plays.” That’s what The New Yorker told A.R. Gurney when he sent them his novel about the lives of two romantics as told through half a century of their love letters to each other. Gurney took this suggestion to heart and rewrote his novel as a play — which went on to score a Pulitzer Prize nomination and become one of the most beloved theatrical works for both actors and audiences alike.

The Toxic Avenger: The Musical

Rorschach Theatre’s first musical follows Melvin Ferd the Third, who is dumped into a vat of radioactive toxic waste, only to reemerge as The Toxic Avenger, a superhero hell-bent on cleaning up America. A seven-foot mutant freak with superhuman strength and a heart as big as Newark, he’s out to end global warming, woo the blind librarian in town, and save the world. Based on the cult classic Troma film, The Toxic Avenger, and directed by Helen Hayes Award winner Tracy Lynn Olivera, this show takes Rorschach’s one-of-a-kind aesthetic and spins it in a whole new direction. Classic B-movie tropes of monsters-run-amok, star-crossed lovers and comically evil politicians collide with an 80’s Hair Band Rock aesthetic to tell a tale that’s both gruesome and glorious. With a set design by Pointless Theatre Company’s Patti Kalil and video design by 9:30 Club VJ and American University professor Kylos Brannon, audiences will be immersed in the sights and sounds of the most polluted town in New Jersey: “If the pollution doesn’t kill you, the aroma will.”

From prolific playwright Lauren Gunderson, Ada and the Engine is a whimsical scientific history that once again proves the future is, and has always been, female. Ada Lovelace, the only legitimate child of the amorous poet Lord Byron, had a love of her own: mathematics. Well, that … plus a certain polymath-inventor, Charles Babbage, famous as “the father of the computer.” It’s true that Babbage invented the hardware — the Analytic Engine — but the language, the song, the soul of the thing, the programming: that was all Ada.

KRS, an acronym for “Knowledge Reigning Supreme”, has been called the “conscience of hip hop” (Rolling Stone_), “the greatest live emcee ever” (The Source_), the “spokesperson for hip hop” (Wall Street Journal), “master teacher” (Zulu Nation) and the “son of hip hop” (Kool DJ Herc). With 20 published albums to his credit and his numerous appearances with other artists, KRS-One is believed to have written the most rhymes in hip hop’s history. In the 1990s as “hip-hop” grew more and more commercialized and corporate, it was KRS-One that openly rejected such cultural exploitation and materialism grounding hip hop in its original principles of peace, love, unity and safely having fun. Teaching everything from self-creation to stopping violence; from vegetarianism to transcendental meditation, from the establishment of Hip Hop Appreciation Week (every third week in May), to establishing hip hop as an international culture at the United Nations (2001), KRS-One has single-handedly held the history and original arts of hip hop together now for over two decades. When NBC announces a national competition to find the nation’s next great musical superstars, Donny joins forces with a motley group of fellow veterans, each an astonishing musician. Together, they form a band unlike any the nation has ever seen. Along the way, they discover the power of music to face the impossible, find their voice and finally feel like they have a place to call home. The Broadway production of Bandstand won a 2017 Tony Award for Best Choreography.

Sting in The Last Ship

Buy Tickets $49 - $279 $49 - $279

Inspired by Sting’s album, The Soul Cages, The Last Ship tells the story of Gideon, a prodigal son returning home after 17 years at sea to find that the local shipyard his town was built around is closing and Meg, the love he left behind, has moved on. Tensions flare and picket lines are drawn as foreman Jackie White (Sting) rallies the workers to take over the shipyard and build one last ship. Completely reimagined since its Broadway debut in 2014, The Last Ship is a love story, a tale of family and friendship, and a passionate homage to the community Sting grew up in. This “thrilling and stirring musical" (The Guardian) at The National Theatre in Washington, D.C. features a Tony-nominated original score by Sting including some of his best-loved songs “Island of Souls,” “All This Time,” and “When We Dance.”
