The Washington Sinfonietta began in May 2006 when Rufus Jones, Jr. was invited by Marcus Jordan to serve as an Artistic Partner of a new musician-run chamber orchestra he was forming. Jordan’s aim to establish a chamber orchestra with outstanding performance capabilities was realized at the first concert on August 19, 2006. The orchestra is administered by its principal conductor, musicians, and Board of Directors who include federal government employees and community members. In partnership with Principal Conductor Joel Lazar, the Sinfonietta seeks to enrich the greater community it serves through exceptional performances and outreach activities. Since August 2006, the orchestra has established its Board of Directors, expanded its concert season to include chamber ensemble performances and solo performances featuring its members, and relocated from the Georgetown University campus to the extraordinarily beautiful Sanctuary at National City Christian Church.
